Product details

Made in Echizen, Fukui, ECHIZEN GAKI brings the materials and manufacturing techniques of traditional Japanese roof tiles to the table.

The plate is made with clay sourced from the Hokuriku region. Rather than processing the clay until it becomes completely uniform, much of its natural texture is preserved. This gives each plate a substantial feel and a surface with visible depth and character.

The low, flat form is finished with a gentle curve at each end, inspired by the shape of Echizen roof tiles. Its simple design works with both Japanese and Western dishes, from small side dishes and desserts to appetizers, grilled foods, and shared plates.

The firing process creates noticeable variations across the surface of each piece. Deeper colors, lighter tones, speckling, uneven shading, and scorch-like markings may appear differently from plate to plate. These kiln-fired variations are part of what makes ECHIZEN GAKI distinctive. Each plate has its own surface character, and no two pieces are exactly alike.

Despite its textured appearance, ECHIZEN GAKI is designed for practical daily use. It is microwave-safe, oven-safe, and dishwasher-safe. The plates can also be stacked for compact storage.

About the Maker

Echizen Ceramica is a roof tile manufacturer established in 1952 in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture.

The company produces Echizen roof tiles using knowledge developed in a region known for heavy rain and snow. By managing the production process from clay preparation through firing, Echizen Ceramica continues to preserve local tile-making techniques while exploring new ways to bring these materials and skills into contemporary life.

ECHIZEN GAKI applies the same clay, forming process, and firing knowledge used for roof tiles to a functional piece of tableware.

Care and Important Notes

  • Each plate will vary in color, shape, clay texture, and surface appearance.
  • The firing process may create darker or lighter areas, uneven shading, speckles, scorch-like markings, or differences in the intensity of the color. These are natural characteristics of the clay and firing process, not defects. They give each plate its own individual appearance, and the piece you receive may look noticeably different from the photographs.
  • This product is safe for use in the microwave, oven, and dishwasher.
  • Oil from food may leave marks on the surface. Before serving oily foods, soaking the plate in clean water for a short time may help reduce staining.
  • Metal utensils may leave marks or scratches on the surface.
  • Do not drag the plate across a table or other furniture, as the underside may scratch the surface. Lift the plate when moving it.
  • Wash promptly after use. Leaving food or moisture on the plate for an extended period may cause staining or mold.
  • After washing, dry thoroughly and store in a dry, well-ventilated place.
  • Handle with care. Although the plate is made using techniques developed for durable roof tiles, ceramic may chip or break if dropped or struck against a hard surface.
  • Colors and textures may appear slightly different depending on lighting and screen settings.
