Kakumono Handwoven Bamboo Basket

Handcrafted in Matsuyama, Ehime, this handled bamboo basket is a contemporary expression of kakumono, a traditional form of structured, box-shaped bamboo basketry.

Unlike softer woven baskets, kakumono are assembled from numerous precisely prepared bamboo components. Some strips are carefully heated and bent at right angles using a traditional fire-bending technique, creating the basket’s clean rectangular form.

Alternating bands of broad bamboo strips and finer weaving give this basket its subtle striped texture. The tall, open shape is well suited for organizing magazines, books, folders, towels, pantry goods, craft supplies, and other household items. Its two movable handles can be raised for carrying or folded down for easier storage.

The pale bamboo will gradually deepen to a warmer amber tone and develop a richer sheen with use. This natural change is part of the experience of living with a handmade bamboo object over time.

About the Maker

Yuki Matsuda is a bamboo craftsperson based in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, where she works under the name Chikuyoh.

After discovering kakumono through a workshop, Matsuda entered the Oita Prefectural Bamboo Craft Training Center in Beppu in 2017. She studied the foundations of bamboo craft for two years before continuing her training and eventually establishing her own studio in her hometown of Matsuyama.

Her work focuses on simple, functional bamboo baskets that can become part of daily life. Each piece is made through the careful preparation, shaping, weaving, and assembly of individual bamboo components, with an emphasis on long-term use and repairability.

Care and Important Notes

• Each basket is made individually by hand using natural bamboo. Variations in color, grain, nodes, weaving, shape, and dimensions are natural characteristics of the material and production process.
• Small marks, uneven coloring, slight gaps, fine splinters, or minor distortions may occasionally be present. Darkened areas or scorch marks may also appear around the corners as a result of the fire-bending process. These are not considered defects and give each basket its individual character.
• The basket you receive may look slightly different from the photographs.
• The bamboo will gradually deepen in color and develop a natural sheen with age and use.
• Keep the basket dry and do not soak it in water. If it becomes wet, wipe away moisture promptly and allow it to dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area.
• For routine cleaning, remove dust with a soft brush or dry cloth. A softly dampened cloth may be used for small marks, but avoid excessive moisture.
• Store and use in a well-ventilated place. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, high heat, and high humidity, which may cause fading, cracking, warping, or mold.
• Do not place in a dishwasher, microwave, or oven.
• When carrying heavier contents, use both handles and support the bottom of the basket. Avoid overloading or carrying excessively heavy objects.
• Because natural bamboo fibers may occasionally feel sharp, handle with care and keep away from small children and pets.
