Product details

Made in Echizen, Fukui, this small ceramic chopstick rest is inspired by the traditional Japanese oni-gawara.

Oni-gawara are ornamental tiles traditionally placed at the ends of roof ridges. Often featuring the powerful face of an oni, they have long been associated with protecting buildings and warding off misfortune.

This miniature version brings the character of traditional Japanese roof tiles to the table. Its detailed expression and compact sculptural form make it functional as a chopstick rest while also adding a distinctive accent to each place setting.

When not in use, it can also be displayed as a small decorative object.

About the Maker

Echizen Ceramica is a roof tile manufacturer established in 1952 in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture.

The company produces traditional Echizen roof tiles using knowledge developed in the Hokuriku region, where roofing materials must withstand heavy rain, wind, and snow. Echizen Ceramica manages nearly every stage of production, from preparing the clay to forming and firing the finished tiles.

Through smaller objects such as this oni-gawara chopstick rest, the company brings the materials, forms, and manufacturing knowledge of Echizen roof tiles into contemporary daily life.

Care and Important Notes

  • Due to the natural characteristics of ceramic production, each piece will vary slightly in color, shape, size, surface texture, and facial details.
  • Small differences in shading, firing marks, speckles, or uneven areas may occur. These are natural characteristics of the material and firing process, not defects, and give each oni-gawara its own individual expression.
  • The piece you receive may look slightly different from the photographs.
  • Wash gently with mild dish soap and a soft sponge. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads, which may damage or scratch the surface.
  • Dry thoroughly after washing before storing.
  • Handle with care. Ceramic may chip or break if dropped or struck against a hard surface.
  • The underside may be slightly rough due to the nature of the material. Lift rather than drag the piece across delicate tables or other surfaces to help prevent scratching.
  • Keep out of reach of small children and pets, as the piece is small and breakable.
  • Colors and textures may appear slightly different depending on lighting and screen settings.
