Ukigami Echizen Washi Tea Canister

Made in Echizen, Fukui, this tea canister is wrapped in UKIGAMI, an original washi paper developed by Yamatsugi Washi Studio.

UKIGAMI means “floating paper,” named for its raised pattern that appears to float above the surface. Yamatsugi’s precise embossing technique creates clearly defined texture and subtle shadows that change depending on the light. Although its rich color and graphic pattern may not look like traditional washi at first, its texture can be felt each time you pick it up or open the lid.

The interior is made from tinplate, making the canister suitable for storing tea leaves, coffee beans, dry snacks, or small household items. It is available in three sizes, each with a different shape and capacity.

About the Maker

Yamatsugi Washi Studio is located in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, an area with approximately 1,500 years of washi-making history. Traditional craftsman Hiroya Yamashita continues to use the fibers and tools associated with Echizen washi while developing new techniques and products for contemporary life.

Care and Important Notes

• Each piece is finished by hand, so the placement and appearance of the pattern may vary slightly. Uneven coloring or small dents on the inside of the lid may also occur and are considered part of the handmade character of the product.
• Because pigment is applied to the surface, color may transfer when rubbed against other items. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
• Keep the canister dry. Water may cause the washi covering to peel or become damaged.
• Do not place near an open flame or other heat source.
• This canister is not completely airtight. For ingredients that are sensitive to moisture or air, we recommend keeping them in a sealed inner bag before placing them inside.
• Natural fibers, plant material, or small variations may occasionally be visible in the washi. These are natural characteristics of the material and do not affect its use.
• Colors and textures may appear slightly different depending on lighting and screen settings.
